Today, the day after Thanksgiving, 2009 is the day we "officially" opened the Corner Shoppe. We started with very little "inventory" and sold coffee from "borrowed" percolator coffee pots. We've come a long way!!

In fact, yesterday we (along with the muscles of our sons-in-law), made more changes by adding another place for customers to sit and enjoy their coffee or meal. Check it out!!!

And, for those of you who didn't venture out for the big town Black Friday, stop in, as the Corner Shoppe has a few of it's own Black Friday and Small Business Saturday specials.

Today's soup/sandwich special is taco soup and quesadilla's.

Christmas is in the air at the Corner Shoppe. While we may be little, and don't carry the amount of items the big city shops offer, we do have a variety of gift items, decorating items and a selection of Christmas cards for you to choose from.

We are also adding to our menu, now serving a soup and sandwich each Friday and Saturday, and our list of flavors for latte's and special coffees is growing as well. Keep posted. There is more to come!!!

Monday, October 18th we will have a FREE kettlebell demonstration and sign up for a 12 week class. Learn how kettlebells can help you tone and achieve all around fitness.
Plan to attend the free session, Monday, October 18th at 5:30 p.m. at the TaeKwon do dojang (above the Corner Shoppe) at 107 1/2 Main Street, Garnavillo.
Fifteen ladies enjoyed an English afternoon
tea, with traditional tea sandwiches, scones and a variety of desserts.

I'm not sure when the next "tea" will be, but you can schedule your own private tea with friends or have a tea party for little girls. Each party is complete with real tea cups, dainty sandwiches and desserts.

All you need to do is let me know!

New flavors of blended iced coffees have arrived:

Dulce de Leche, Pralines 'n cream, Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint. Plus, we have ideas for latte''s and other special coffee drinks as well!!!!

We plan to have one weekend (each month or every other month) to feature a "day in a country". Our first featured country will be England, and we will offer an "afternoon tea" .

Another feature will be a visit from the owner of a yarn shop. She will display various yarns and give customers an opportunity to use their knitting and crocheting skills on the variety of yarn samples. And of course all yarns (and other products) will be available for purchase.

We have been busy at the Corner Shoppe & Coffee House. We added 3 new display shelves which allows us a lot more room to display the merchandise, and add more merchandise. Stop in and see what you think.

We have also started a punch card for your favorite beverages; buy 10 and get one free. You choose your favorite beverage, and as long as you can keep track of the cards, you can have as many different beverage cards as you like!

Friday, August 27 was a special day, as our aunt and uncle (Jim & Maxine Gray) enjoyed lunch at the shoppe with family celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary!

Congratulations Jim and Maxine

Another special group visited the shoppe on Friday! We have 13 Red Hat Ladies stop in for desserts! (Thanks to Gertrude Brase and Sharon Keehner for inviting them.)

Specials for the day were carrot cake, Boston cream pie, key lime pie, crumble apple pie and toffee bars. All home made, or course!!

The Corner Shoppe has a new front appearance, after years in the waiting, and a extended new name. The renovation of the store front is complete, short a few finishing touches.

We've also extended the name to include "Coffee House" so everyone knows we are more than a gift/variety shop.

Lanny has been in contact with a coffee wholesaler in Davenport, who was very helpful in teaching him some basics about the espresso machine. He told us he would "give" us an hour of his time to learn more about making specialty coffees (i.e. cappuccino's, latte's). A few weeks ago we traveled to Davenport, met him at 9:00 a.m. and 5 hours later packed our pickup with all sorts of advertising signs, new flavors of smoothie mixes, new products to sell, and lots of information to absorb!

We now offer iced coffee, blended ice coffee (in flavors of vanilla latte, mocha and caramel latte) and smoothies in the flavors of strawberry, lemon (my favorite), mixed berry, and orange tangerine.

A LESSON IN HISTORY (of the Corner Shoppe)

Lanny and I started the "Corner Shoppe" in November 2009, as we had a vacant store building (downstairs) on main street, Garnavillo.
In 1939, my great-grandfather, Alvin J. Kregel, purchased the old(original) hardware store along with Charlie Roggman. Later, they built what became the "new" hardware store which is currently the home of the Garnavillo Auction. In 1969 my father, Dale E. Wahls purchased the 2 hardware buildings and was in business until he passed away in 1999.

One day in the year 2000, Lanny came home and asked me if I wanted to buy the "old hardware store". My first comment was, "absolutely not". The building had not been used for anything but storage for over 20 years, and it was in a state of major disrepair. However, after a few days and a reminder that it had been in the family for 60+ years, I said okay. I knew Lanny had a vision for something, I just didn't know what, or when it would be.

The first week end we "opened for business" we had no idea what to expect. A few people came in to see what was happening, and it made us happy to have a few interested customers.

Lanny's comment was we didn't have enough "stuff" in the shoppe, and I admit it was rather bare. However, we are growing and adding new things weekly, a lot in response to what our customers want.
